HOW TO PLANT THE PERFECT PERENNIAL GARDEN
Good friend and colleague Ron Wilson, Natorp’s Marketing Manager and Expert, talks this week about planning a perennial garden.
PLAN BEFORE YOU PLANT YOUR PERENNIAL GARDEN
When figuring out which perennials to plant in your perennial garden, you will need to do a little research. With perennials blooming at different times, you will want to plan your garden to enjoy flowers and foliage throughout the season. With a bit of forethought, you can enjoy a constant rotation of color and flowers.
GET INSPIRED
A great source of inspiration is Cincinnati’s Perennial Gardens. It gives you a chance to see perennials in action in the landscape. Visit local gardens, Cincinnati Parks, Spring Grove Cemetary and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens. Of course, Natorp’s Nursery is also filled with acres of perennial inspiration.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
Now that you are filled with inspiration, it is time to research your plants. During your research, these are things to plan for:
- Season-long colour
- Differing Heights
- Vary Widths
- Consider sunlight and shade
- Types of soil
- Hardiness in Cincinnati (Cincinnati is Zone 6)
- Amount of maintenance required
- Any wildlife issues
