Each week I chat with Matt Swaim on the Sonrise Morning Show of Sacred Heart Radio. Today we talked about the 3 magi/wise men/kings who bought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Here’s a little bible history:

They are often depicted as representing 3 races, 3 ages of adult men and 3 different areas.

The first was called Melchior, and according to tradition, he was king of Persia, around 60 years old.  He was an old man, with white hair and long beard; He offered gold to the Lord.

The second, Gaspar/Caspar by name, fairly young, middle age, around 40,  beardless, of ruddy hue, offered to Jesus his gift of frankincense.

The third, of black complexion, with heavy beard, was the youngest, about 20, and was called Balthazar. He brought myrrh.

Symbolisms

Gold

Gold symbolized royalty so was a perfect gift for the future kings.

Frankincense 
Frankincense symbolized divinity (represents life and was used to anoint newborns.(Frankincense/boswelia is healing and is sometimes included with Turmeric in capsules for inflammation and respiratory health.)

 Myrrh

Myrrh symbolized Jesus’ future death, as it was an ingredient used in embalming at the time to keep away the smell.

5 MINUTE CAJUN NUTS

Perfect for a hostess gift or to nosh on as you decorate the tree. Can be doubled or tripled.

Ingredients

2 teaspoons oil

2  teaspoons Cajun seasoning

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper or less, or more, to taste

8 oz. lower salt roasted peanuts or favorite nuts

Instructions

Heat oil and seasonings in large skillet over medium low. When it starts to bubble, add nuts. Cook for a couple of minutes, stirring constantly so nuts get evenly coated. Cool and store in airtight container.
