Homemade Laundry Soap: Fun to Make Laundry Soap

Homemade Laundry Soap

Homemade Laundry Soap

I purchased a tub of this at an herbal convention and read the ingredients. Heck, those are available at my local store, so I found a recipe for homemade laundry soap online and here it is. I’ve been making this for a couple of years, and really love it. It doesn’t make a lot of suds, but it sure does clean well.

Homemade Laundry Soap Recipe
1 – 55 ounce box of Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1 – 76 ounce box of 20 Mule Team Borax
4.5 ounce bars Ivory Bar Soap (if you’re lucky enough to find Ivory flakes, use that – much easier than grating the bars!) OR equivalent amount of Fels Naptha soap for heavily soiled clothes

How to make a batch of homemade laundry soap.

Mix together

1 bar of shaved bar soap
1 cup of borax
1 cup of washing soda

Optional but nice: Drops of lavender essential oil – as many as you like for fragrance.

For a full load, I’ll use a couple of scoops.

There was also a note about high efficiency front load washers in the recipe:
Regarding High Efficiency (HE) Front-Load Washers

HE front-load washers require “special soap” for one reason alone – low suds. Because they use less water, they require soap that is less sudsy. The good news is,this homemade detergent is VERY low suds.
