Each week I talk with Brian Patrick on Sacred Heart radio about Bible foods & herbs. Today  we talked about plants that are associated with the mysteries of the rosary and I shared a couple of good recipes for Cajun shrimp which use some of the ingredients that we talked about.

HERBS, PLANTS AND FLOWERS ASSOCIATED WITH THE MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY

Twenty mysteries in all, divided into 5 segments,  and they represent the complete cycle of life, growth, death and renewal.

Joyful: Takes us through the Annunciation, Jesus’ birth and on to them finding Jesus in the temple. Members of the onion and lily families, including garlic, onions and lilies are associated with these mysteries.

Luminous: Focuses on the life of Jesus and the work He did from the time He was baptized to offering the first Eucharist. Plants of the mustard family, almonds, grapes, and grains are associated with the Luminous mysteries.

Sorrowful: We see Jesus’ sorrow through his Mother’s eyes, from the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane to His crucifixion. For His agony in the Garden, we associate passion flower, olives and aloe vera.

Glorious:  These bring us back to life and hope, starting with His resurrection into heaven and finishing with Mary being crowned Queen of Heaven.  Members of the rose family, including roses, raspberries, strawberries and apples are among the plants associated with the Glorious mysteries.

Superbowl is coming up and these recipes incorporate some of the seasonings talked about above. You can use any size shrimp  you like.
