MASTER RECIPE CHEESE STRATA
Today I chatted with Anna Mitchell on the Sonrise Morning Show about Yom Kippur, the most holy day on the Jewish calendar. This year, from the evening of October 11 through the evening of October 12, the Jewish custom is to fast, refrain from work and/or attend synagogue services. The name Yom Kippur means day of atonement and repentance.
To break the fast, many people eat a dairy focused dish since that may be easier for empty tummies to digest rather than a heavy meat based meal.
Here’s a recipe of sorts for strata that is delicious and easy to make. And you don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy it. This strata is a nice breakfast or brunch dish on its own. It doubles or triples easily.
Preheat oven to 350.
Spray a baking dish. Put bread in. Sprinkle 2 cups cheese over. Beat milk and eggs, salt and pepper until well blended. Pour over cheese. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top. Smoosh bread down until it’s covered with the liquid mixture.
Let sit for 30 minutes or so – this allows the bread to absorb the liquid. Cover with foil, bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and finish baking for about 10 minutes or so, just until the center is set and doesn’t jiggle.
TO DO AHEAD
Cover with foil, put in frig up to a day, remove foil, let sit 30-45 minutes prior to baking so it’s not too chilled when it goes into the oven, and proceed with recipe, covering again with foil to bake. It may take a bit longer to bake.
