Spearmint best for Juleps & Mojitos

Celebrating Derby Day? Or Cinco de Mayo? Here’s 2 classic drinks, one for the Derby and the other for Cinco de Mayo. Spearmint reigns!

Mint Julep

Make a simple syrup:

1 cup water

1 cup sugar

A generous 1/2 cup roughly chopped spearmint leaves

4 ozs good bourbon

Combine water, sugar and spearmint leaves in a pan and bring to a boil and cook until sugar dissolves.

Let cool, then strain.

Fill your frozen goblets (or even regular glasses, not frozen) with crushed ice and pour about 4 ozs good bourbon and 1/4 cup mint syrup in each. Go to taste on this! Top with mint sprig



Now some folks are using Mojito mint, available here in Cincinnati at Natorp’s. It’s got a citrusy lime minty flavor.


6 ounces light rum

12 spearmint sprigs, 8 torn apart

1/4 to 1/3 cup fresh lime juice

4 tablespoons sugar or more to taste

Club soda

4 slices lime

Place ice in beverage shaker then add in the rum, 8 broken up mint sprigs, lime juice and sugar. Shake well and serve over ice in a high ball glass. Top off each glass with a splash of club soda. Top with mint sprig
