Basil Buttermilk Dressing Makes Good Use of Excess Basil

Pruning your basil? Well, so am I and here’s the perfect recipe to use with those trimmings!



If your basil is starting to flower or is leggy, cut it back. Use the cuttings in this tasty recipe. Adapted slightly from Dottie K. This is delish on sliced tomatoes or mixed greens. Dottie’s original recipe said 2 green onions, so go to taste on that. And no need to pack the basil leaves in the cup.


2 cups basil leaves

3/4 cup buttermilk

3/4 cup green onions, white and green parts, sliced

3/4 cup mayonnaise

Salt and pepper to taste


Put basil, buttermilk and onions in food processor and process until smooth.

Add mayonnaise and seasonings and process until mayonnaise is mixed in.
